So Perry Ferrel must not have liked all those little Lollapalooza lineup rumors and leaks from Jim DeRo.
The headliners have already made quite a statement, but it is the medium- and small-sized bands that usually tend to give this festival its depth. So what do all of you folks think? Seems like they’ve definitely picked up on some of the key 2007-08 indie rock favs. Is this on par with previous years? A step up?

I had a big week with full editing duties at LMB as Justin has been out of town enjoying the Maui sun. Since I played a role in everything that we posted this past week, I thought I’d include a full “weekly round-up” similar to what I just posted at LMB. Here’s a run-down of what went down…

First, my 3 favorite posts:

Pearl Jam to Headline Lollapalooza 2007!

Chicago Sun-Times’ Pop Music Critic, Jim Derogatis, is today reporting that Pearl Jam will headline this year’s Lollapalooza, which is set for August 3rd – 5th in Grant Park…

Langerado 2007 Preview | Checkin’ Out the New

Yep, that’s right folks, I’ll be headin’ down to Florida for the festival extravaganza that is Langerado! One thing I’m especially exicted about is the possibility of checkin’ out a bunch of bands that I’ve never experienced in the live setting.

Podcast #054 – The Best of the Bays

Last week, I wrote a little round-up of some of the key bands that play some form of live, electronic dance music. But I realized that I neglected to mention a band that I really should have discussed: The Bays

Here’s the rest of what went down this past week:

The Duo’s Latest Doings | Marco Tour, the ‘Zeppelin Experience,’ and Indie Props

Been wondering about the Benevento-Russo Duo? They had a rather huge 2006, dropping a stellar album, doing a summer tour with Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon, hitting Lollapalooza, and wrapping things up with a solid fall tour.

Bonnaroo 2007 | Artists Additions, Round One

So Bonnaroo quietly announced two more additions to their initial line-up that was leaked and subsequently confirmed a couple weeks back. The two new additions are: The Roots and The Wild Magnolia Mardi Gras Indians

Chk Chk Chk (!!!) Makes Me Dance Dance Dance [video]

This band with the name nobody’s sure what to do with have recently been really grabbin’ my attention. Perhaps I’m just in a dancey/groovy mood this week, but the tracks I’ve been hearing from their forthcoming album are hot hot hot!

The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne Believes…

Yesterday, NPR listeners were treated to a little soliloquoy by Mr. Coyne when he added his commentary for the NPR series of personal stories, “This, I Believe.” Coyne discussed his experience realizing ways to achieve personal happiness…

The Police 2007 Tour | Sell-Outs and New Dates

The recently re-united Police have created quite a stir in the concert world since they played the Grammys. They’ve recently sold out a bunch of the initial stadium dates they announced a couple weeks back, which included a headlining slot at Bonnaroo…

Feist | New CD and Tour Dates

She’s been labeled everything from a modern torch singer to a retro indie rocker. Her MySpace lists her genre as indie/folk/alternative. And reportedly you can hear all of these facets of Feist and more on her newly announced 2007 CD, The Reminder.

Joshua Tree Music Festival | 2007 Line-up

California music festivals are popular for a number of reasons. The Joshua Tree Music Festival is no exception to the norm. The festival takes place May 18th – 20th…

Toubab Krewe | Spring 2007 Tour Dates

Toubab Krewe — who I recently tagged as one of the bands I’m excited to see for the first time at Langerado — starts its Spring tour tonight at the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC.

The Slip | 2007 Spring Tour Dates

The Slip — perhaps the band that best exemplifies the term “post-jam” — had a big 2006. But, to be honest, I think they may be slated for an even bigger year in 2007.

The Whigs | 2007 Tour Dates

Ever heard the Whigs? Plain and simple, these guys rock…

Phish Friday | Fall ’97, Not Just the Cow Funk Era

There are various “eras” of Phish history that get a lotta play, but I’d venture to say that the band’s Fall 1997 tour is one of the most popular and often given the label “Epic!”

Heady Links | New Album Edition

…so what better way to spend the time than to sip on a beverage and whip up a bunch of ‘heady links’ for all ya’ll. I thought I’d mention a few album items from this past week…

Phew! That was a heck of a week!

Well done NPR, well done.

LMM last caught Wilco at Lollapalooza this August for a solid set of some of their classics and a few new tunes. But since then, I’ve been jonesin’ for more than a short festival slot. They’ll be ending their current tour with two hometown shows at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, so LMM is hoping to grab some of those pre-sale tix when they are released Wednesday, 10/18 at 10AM CT.

Wilco’s next album doesn’t come out until the spring, but frontman Jeff Tweedy’s got a solo DVD release, called “Sunken Treasure: Live in the Pacific Northwest,” that comes out on 10/24. There’s also a nice YouTube clip making the rounds, with Tweedy performing a “great sing-along” song called “The Thanks I Get”…great song, check it:

Looks like Lollapalooza‘s following up a great festival with some live downloads for sale. Got an email a bit ago saying some concert recordings are now availble (via iTunes) from the following artists:

The email also explained that recordings from ALL of the festival’s performances will be available at LiveLollapalooza.com when the store officially launches on October 19th. I’m a bit bummed they went with iTunes instead of eMusic (or another download service that doesn’t use DRM), but I can live with it. One big thumbs up is that they’ll be offering downloads in both MP3 and the lossless FLAC format (for all you picky audiophiles out there).

Now, exactly which shows to grab is going to be a tough one. I can’t wait to hear that whole Broken Social Scene set, but I’d love to get down to that Disco Biscuits’ closer (“Caterpillar”), and then again I really dug Andrew Bird’s sound….Hmmm.

So Lollapalooza is going down right in our backyard here in Chi-town and LMM’s definitely getting pumped to see a large swath of bands. Here’s a few preview items of note:

Chicago’s Innerview magazine has the full run-down of bands by date and set-time; nice and succinct.

As it did for Coachella and Bonnaroo, AT&T’s Blueroom is offering a webcast of Lollapalooza for those of you who can’t make it to Grant Park for the actual festival. They’re webcasting a few selected artists from each day’s offerings.

There are a bunch of after-parties and Lolla-related concerts going on this weekend; as always, Jambase has a solid calendar of events, and New City has a few other after-parties they’re promoting.

Speaking of afterparties, Zeppelin tribute band, Bustle in Your Hedgerow, is at the Abbey on Sunday night for a Lolla after-party show, with a special guest filling in for Scotty Metzger on guitar. Justin at LiveMusicBlog suggests the psosibility of Trey Anastasio sitting in. Could very well be Jake Cinniger of Umphrey’s Mcgee or even Jon Gutwillig of the Disco Biscuits; either of those two would offer some stunning tributes to Jimmy Page, but Justin just might be right on this one, given the Duo’s recent connection to the ex-Phish guitarist.

UPDATE: Okay, so it looks like the guest guitarist for the Bustle show will be Brendan Bayliss of UM; hey, my guess was pretty darn close. Thanks to Justin for the scoop.

Did I miss something? Shoot me a note in the comments.

Lotus @ Schuba’s – Sat. 4.22

Lotus is bringing its live, electronic dance party to Schuba’s this Saturday 4/22, with an opening slot by DJ Harry. They’re on the road in support of their latest release, The Strength of Weak Ties, and will follow-up their Schuba’s gig with a free performance Sunday afternoon at Tower Records (3 pm at 2301 N. Clark St. #200).

I caught Lotus back in early 2004 and while they definitely got down and dirty enough to make me shake the backside, my sense was that they were a bit derivative of Sound Tribe Sector Nine in the live, electronic instrumental realm. They certainly hit on most of the “hippy techno” stereotypes, with long funky jams laid over danceable beats. But since then, they’ve toured heavily across the country, released a more mature album (even mixing it up with some vocals), and sound as though they’re trying to develop a more unique sound. The focus is still guitar-laden electronic rock, but there are cuts from the album that venture in to new territory (one even sounds like old Tortoise). It’ll be interesting to see what they bring to Schuba’s on Saturday.

Disco Biscuits @ the Vic – Fri. 5.5

Speaking of jambands playing electronic dance music, the Disco Biscuits (arguably the originators of this “genre”), will bring their signature “Trance-Fusion” to the Vic Theatre on Friday May 5th. They’re currently on tour (doing a southern swing) and breaking in their new drummer, Allen Aucoin, who has his work cut out for him after replacing Sam Altman, tDB’s drummer of 10 years and fierce layer of intricate “four-on-the-floor” beats.

Last time tDBs were in Chi-town (<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 /><st1:date month="2" day="3" year="2004">2/3/04</st1:date>), they had a short, one-set slot at the Aragon (opening for Moe), and only really managed to touch on some of the dark and trancy territory they’ve been known to dominate. The Vic gig will be their first, full two-set appearance in Chicago since the Spring of 2003, so this is a big comeback gig in the heart of the Midwest. Of course, in the grand scheme, it’s really only a primer for their August appearance at Lollapalooza this summer. Should be an interesting showcase, and reports from the current tour are mixed, although many suggest their showing signs of improvement. But I remain cautious about their ongoing evolution…C’mon tDB, prove me wrong!

Secret Machines at Metro Sat. 5/13

The indie experimental atmospherics of the Secret Machines are coming to the Metro on Saturday, May 13th. With the release of their new LP, Ten Silver Drops (Reprise), Secret Machines are launching a worldwide tour taking them to cities throughout the U.S. and Canada, across the Pond to Europe, and then to Japan, for the Summer Sonic Festival. U.S. dates will also include several summer festival appearances, with the a notable stop in Grant Park for Lollapalooza on August 4th, and some TV appearances on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” on April 25 and on “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” on May 3.

Pitchfork has the whole breakdown, but for Chicagoans, tix for the Metro show go on sale Saturday, 4/22 at <st1:time hour="10" minute="0">10AM</st1:time> and Lollapalooza tix have been on sale for some time.

…And if you want a taste of their live show, the always-generous NPR live concert series has a Secret Machines show from last August available for streaming.
