ode to the weissenborn guitar

embracing my inner guitar geek

The Weissenborn is an acoustic lap-steel guitar with a hollowed-out neck. I first heard (and fell in love with) this guitar’s distinct tone back in the early 90s on Ben Harper’s debut album “Welcome to the Cruel World.” Ben has since helped popularize the instrument by making it a signature piece of his sound. He discusses a few of his guitars in this clip from his Pleasure and Pain dvd (which I, unfortunately, cannot embed on this page).

But Ben ain’t the only guy jammin on a Weissenborn…

Just last night I was just talking to my buddy who caught My Morning Jacket and the Slip last Friday here in Chi-town (one show, of several, that I lamented having to miss because of my Thanksgiving travels).

Anyways, he told me that MMJ was joined by the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra for a few tunes, which sounded awesome and made missing the show that much harder to swallow. MMJ is a great live band, and having the orchestral arrangments thrown into their sound is all the better in my opinion. Unfortunately, no video of that exact performance, but here’s MMJ playing what’s easily one of my favorite tunes, “Gideon,” backed by the Boston Pops Orchestra on Letterman:

Looks like they’ve got a new album due in March and are heading out on a 17-date tour in Europe. Here’s hoping they add some dates across the pond in the U.S., because these guys rock out in the live setting.

So, my Friday YouTubing post is his latest video for the uber-funky “Cell Phones Dead.” Unlike some of the low-budget home music videos Beck apparently released along with the Information, this one is professionally produced and just damn cool. I can’t decide if I’m strangely intrigued or a bit frightened, but either way, it’s one of my fav tracks off his latest release:

By the way, Kimock releases the majority of his shows (from Zero or SKB) via DigitalSoundboard.net, which in my experience is a great independent, digital music portal with solid customer service. If you dig Kimock’s sound, you can definitely find something worth downloading.
