All Good 2008 | Festival Preview

ALLGOOD.gif

The All Good Music festival kicks off this Thursday up at Marvin’s Mountaintop in Masontown, WV. If all works out well, we’ll have some decent coverage of the festival this year, including an update from yours truly. As a result, I thought I’d do a preview of this year’s lineup and flesh out a quick list of the bands I am most stoked to see.

As I noted back when they posted the schedule, All Good has scheduled the festival so that there are no overlapping sets. Thus, that means no tough decisions or scheduling headaches. What’s interesting about this year’s lineup is that I think I am more excited to see some of the small- to medium-sized acts over the headliners. Don’t get me wrong — I’m sure Panic and Franti will be great, but for some reason there are a lot of other bands that are grabbing a bit more of my attention.

Phish Friday | The 4th of Jiboo

Happy Independence Day from Live Music Blog!

It’s hard to believe that 8 years ago today I was seeing Phish at the E Centre in Camden, NJ, celebrating what was probably my favorite 4th of July as an “adult” so far. It was the sixth show in a long East Coast run that I spent with various groups of my favorite people, all without much of a care in the world. This six-show run was probably the closest I ever got to going “on tour” with the band, and I feel blessed to have had the free time and money to pull it off. Beyond getting to the next show, we really had no other goals than to have a blast. And that we did.

Capping off that entire run was a special Independence Day celebration at the E-Centre in Camden, NJ, which had slowly become one of Phish’s key stomping grounds on the East Coast. The band kicked off the show with an a cappella version of the “Star Spangled Banner” and everything after that was like a perfect reminder of why live music + summer = one of the best combinations in existence.

Of course the highlight of the show was the mammoth second set opener, a nearly 30-minute “Gotta Jiboo” followed by a killer sequence of songs you could only hear at a Phish show. I included “Saw It Again” and “Magilla” because they’re my favorites of the second set:

Rothbury Festival | Webcasts and Prep Photos

Reminder time.

The inaugural Rothbury Festival kicks off this weekend up in Rothbury, Michigan.

iClips.net is once again coming through with some webcasts from the weekend’s activities.

And man, it really takes a lot of hard work to put on a festival in the middle of nowhere these days, especially if you want to compete with the Bonnaroos of the world! On a thread over at PT Bisco, I came across these photos of all the Rothbury preparations. These really give a nice sense of all the stuff that needs to come together for these things.

Looks like a sweet spot for a festival….unless it rains. We hope it’s a great weekend for the Rothbury revelers. At least they’ll have those crazy swinging monkeys from Burning Man to make things interesting:

Groundation | Outback Lounge, Charlottesville, VA 6/25/08

Editor’s Note: This is a guest post from a work friend of mine, Mike S, who has been expressing some interest in LMB for a while. Mike caught a great reggae show in Charlottesville last week and felt compelled to snap some photos and do a solid write-up for LMB. Though I had never heard of Groundation, he has definitely piqued my interest. Check it out.

It is always a memorable moment when a piece of music involuntarily grabs a hold of you. I was first introduced to Groundation when a friend began playing their album Hebron Gate at a little get together last year. Immediately, whatever conversation I was involved in dropped and I had to know, “Who is this? Where are they from? How have I not heard this before?” I was instantly drawn to the remarkable structure of this album and the unparalleled vocal expression of lead singer Harrison Stafford. I noticed that each song had its own distinctive quality and feel, and for me, it evolved into one of the few wide-ranging, concrete albums that I can listen through without ever feeling the urge to skip a track.

After doing some research into this uplifting reggae group and listening to some of their other albums, I was all the more captivated and became increasingly eager to see them live. This great anticipation finally took shape when I noticed a few weeks back that Groundation would be making an east coast run. Not only that, but I saw that they were playing only three blocks from my current residence. I could not have asked for a better opportunity…

All Good 2008 | Schedule Announced, No Tough Decisions

Allgood2008.gif

The All Good Music Festival has announced its full weekend schedule for 2008, including late-night pre-party sets on Thursday, July 10. Unlike some of its larger brethren in the festival world, All Good has made a point not to schedule any overlapping sets throughout the weekend. So, no tough decisions between big headliners or up-and-comers that you really want to check out.

Good call, All Good; I dig it. Of course, this festival is smaller than the Bonnaroos of the world and a bit more focused on the jam niche. But I think this is a crowd-pleasing move that may help set them apart from other fests. Plus, that late-night Thursday pre-party looks like it’ll be a throw-down.

Speaking of which, early arrival tickets for the Pre-Party are available for $15 in advance and $30 at the gate. Advance weekend passes are available for $139 or by phone by at 1-800-594-TIXX.

Full schedule after the jump…

The Bays | Live Electronic Dance Music With An Orchestra?

The-Bays-live.jpg

It’s been quite some time since I’ve written about the Bays. These guys really continue to push the envelope with live, improvised electronic dance music. You might compare them to U.S. acts doing similar styles (the Disco Biscuits, STS9, Lotus), but their whole schtick is that they do not record albums, have songs, or really practice together as a group. They improvise, live and onstage. And they’ve been touring this with this strategy for years.

A while back, I put together a “Best of the Bays” podcast, featuring some of my favorite moments of Bays improv. It’s a good example of their standard live sound. But I recently decided to check back in with these guys, and I came across their latest progression…

The Bays have paired up with an orchestra and a composer to perform their standard set with a seriously cool twist. Through the use of composition software that allows the composer to compose on-the-spot, they’re creating live electronic dance music with an orchestra.

They’ve released a new (free) podcast of their collaboration with the Ensemble at Integra and also have this video that runs through the entire project:

This is some groundbreaking shit.

RIP George Carlin

LMB is taking a moment of pause to remember George Carlin, a comedic genius who’s passing on Sunday sent shockwaves through all facets of pop culture. His contributions to comedy and generally challenging the status quo will not be easily forgotten.

Heady Links

It has been an über hectic week for both Justin and I, leading to a little bit lighter posting on the site. I’ve been dealing with all sorts of projects mixing this way and that with moments of frenzy and periods of lull….it’s almost a bit like the ups and downs of Sigur Ros’s new album, með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust. Speaking of which, that crazy Icelandic crew has just added a bunch of dates to its world tour, including more U.S. shows and some dates in Japan. Okay, that may be an the awful segue, but the news is not awful and is sure to get a few folks excited.

Moving on to some other news bites:

And you know we can’t end the week without them! Hot off their big Bonnaroo show last weekend, My Morning Jacket played Late Night with Conan O’Brien last night. Interestingly, they managed to squeeze in a shortened version of one of their longer cuts from Evil Urges, called “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream, Pt. 2″ — which just so happens to be one of my favs. Check it out:
