So Microsoft officially released its new Zune media player (and supposed “iPod killer”) to much aplomb and fanfare. While the media attention has been building for months, the majority of the Zune press has tended to dwell on the negatives. People are understandably pretty hard on Microsoft.
My take is that if you’re going to try to take down the iPod, you better do it right…and it doesn’t look like they’ve done much right. The more I hear, the more this sounds like another overly complex Microsoft product that doesn’t quite live up to its hype and doesn’t match the simplicity of the iPod interface.
Since every blogger and their mother has covered the thing do death, here’s a run-down of just some of the swoon over Zune:
- The marketing push, complete with Zune release parties and concerts nationwide
- And even some attempts to court the “Indie Rock” fans
- Zune’s deal with Universal
- A full Zune run-down via Engadget
- DigitalMusicWeblog on the NYT’s critique
- Still some unanswered questions
- Will Zune allow users to share video?
- That new “sharing” feature has some problems
